July 13, 2009. Salina, UT to Eureka, NV

We had a 300 mile day done in just four stages; Salina to Delta, Delta to State Line, State Line to Ely and Ely to Eureka. We were at the Best Western in Eureka by 2PM (Pacific Time).

All of today was on Route 50, The Loneliest Highway, and we have the photos to show it.
Surprisingly, at the state line, about 80 miles outside of Salina, there was a Casino, Gas station, restaurant and Motel; all the folks from Utah must come over the border to enjoy the wildness of Nevada. We had gas and water and moved on.

Empty, barren land. But nice elevations and curves intermittently from the flat, straight desert. It is beautiful in a certain, stark way.

We had breakfast in Delta, UT where we spoke briefly after breakfast with a guy on a GS 1200 hailing from San Antonio but on his way to see an uncle in Denver. He had come from Reno; about 550 miles, the day before.

We stopped and had lunch at the Hotel Nevada in Ely (circa 1929) which is still a hotel, casino and restaurant. Across the street was Mr. G's restaurant, photo of which I will ultimately get to our own Mr. G.

Ely was a rock and rollin town which seems to still benefit from gambling and eating.

It was a 77-mile straight ride to Eureka with more curves and mountains. We arrived early in the afternoon.

Next door was the gas station/convenient market/laundromat. I did a load and folded!

While the clothes were in the wash I walked around this 1870s boom town; lots of gold was here once upon a time and they are still mining it today. In the 1870s, however, this town was built. There is a beautiful Opera House, Court House, Museum and lots of cool buildings. I have really enjoyed Eureka and put on the list of other things to become more interested in.

We had dinner at a local restaurant/casino. Mark and I have gotten used to sitting at the bar and enjoying the conversation with the locals.
