Monday, July 6, 2009 Central City, NE to Sidney, NE

We made it to Sidney, NE after about 280 miles today. Sidney, NE is HQ for outfitter Cabelas. We are just down the street, but due to a wicked thunderstorm, passed on walking up the street.

Route 30 in Nebraska is a wonderful road. Predominantly well-paved two-laner, you climb over and cut through cornfields and prairie at 65 mph without the headache of 18-wheelers, but lots of tractors, farm equipment and our eleventh dead deer on the side of the road.

Raccoons like corn, and by the number of road kill, they are numerous in the area.

Much of today's ride, like yesterdays, was alongside the Union Pacific railroad, so we saw many freight trains as well. Lots of grain silos and some ethanol processing plants.

The livestock trucks leave a particular aroma in their wake!

Breadfast was at Tex's in the pretty town of Kearney, NE. While filling up at the local Sinclair (read BP or British Petroleum) we inquired about where to have breakfast. Another great recommendation.

Many of these towns have a similar make up of typical main street with brick-front buildiings and angle parking. People are nice and instead of saying "Hi" they say "Hey"! Similar to being in the South.

From breakfast we beat it 90 miles to North Platte. There is a lot to see and do in North Platte. It has the largest train yard in the country. There's a fott and Wild Bill's Ranch. We didn't make it to any, believing we had a 300 mile ride ahead of us.

After North Platte we continued west uuntil we reache3d Olagalla. Lunch was at A&W. I had a great onion, mushrrom and swiss burger. From there we called and made a reservation at the American Inn in sidney, NE just beyond Chappell.

Originally I had thought we'd stay at the Empire Motel in Chappell. We drove past it. It was scary. STAY NEAR THE INTERSTATES!

We arrived about 3PM. By the time we unpacked, cellphoned home, adjusted the chain on Mark's Triumph, showered, &tc.. it was after 6PM.

We walked across the parking lot to the Perkins Breakfast and Bakery. The local steakhouse was closed (on Mondays). Bummed out about the lack of adult beverage, the Perkins in Gettysburg was dry, I moped across the parking lot only, lo and behold, it had a full bar! Double Johnny Walker Red (what's Dewars?) and a glass of cabernet with the 7oz steak, carrots and broccoli. Mark had a grilled Cheese.

Walking back across the parking lot, the weather turned stormy with a ten degree temperature drop, high winds and a slate greay sky.

We're having a good time, missing friends, coworkers, and family. Still, won't be back anytime soon.

Lots of love from Nevada,

Poncho y Cisco
